This paper will describe the past and present technology of oil-less air compressors and vacuum pumps. The first mass produced small oil-less type compressors were designed as recently as the late 50's, their use intended for the homeowner's portable paint spray market. The service duty was intermittent mechanical and volumetric efficiency was not as demanding as units manufactured today.
