Hurtigruten will become the first cruise line in the world to power their ships with liquifiedbiogas (LBG), a fossil-free, renewable fuel produced from dead fish and other organic waste.Hurtigruten expects to invest more than 850 million USD in building the world’s greenestcruise line.The company has invested heavily in green technology such as battery solutions, and launchedthe world’s first battery-hybrid powered cruise ship, MS Roald Amundsen in 2019. It is currentlybuilding another hybrid powered expedition cruise ship at Norway’s Kleven Yard – the MSFridtjof Nansen to be delivered in 2020.The next step is a large-scale green upgrade project, replacing traditional diesel propulsionwith battery packs and gas engines on several Hurtigruten ships. In addition to liquified naturalgas (LNG), these ships will also be the first cruise ships in the world to run on liquified biogas(LBG).Biogas is a clean energy source, considered the most eco-friendly fuel currently available.Biogas is already used as fuel in small parts of the transport sector, especially in buses.Northern Europe and Norway, which has large fishery and forestry sectors that produces asteady volume of organic waste, has a unique opportunity to become world leader in biogasproduction. By 2021, Hurtigruten plans to operate at several of its ships on a combination of biogas, LNGand large battery packs and the newest propeller technology.There are more than 300 cruise ships in the world, many of them running on cheap, pollutingheavy fuel oil (HFO). The daily emissions from one single mega cruise ship can according toNGOs be equivalent to one million cars. While they are running on cheap, polluting heavy fueloil, our ships will literally be powered by nature. Biogas is the greenest fuel in shipping, and willbe a huge advantage for the environment. We would love other cruise companies to follow,says Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam.
