The Globalization of Human Subject Research: Implications for Research Ethics

The substantial growth of human subject research in resource poor nations has made research a global endeavor. As of 2007, there were 36,249 clinical trials being conducted in 140 countries. Subject recruitment in Eastern Europe Latin America, and Southeast Asia grew from less than 8% in 2002 to 20% in 2006 and the number of foreign investigators conducting research under FDA applications increased from 41 in 1980 to 4,458 in 1999.
