In this study, with the aim of proposing the rational andconcise theoretical formulae to estimate the reduction ineffective bending span of a longitudinal stiffener due to a webstiffener, the authors firstly determined the effective span insingle and double hull structure from the elastoplastic analysis,then established a theoretical formula to estimate the effectivespan for various different combinations of structuralarrangement and scantlings. Then, the authors compared thetheoretically derived effective span with that derived fromfinite element analysis in some parametric studies, andconfirmed good agreement between them. As a result, thefollowing concluding remarks can be made.
