The stiffeners (20, 30) have central vertical pieces (21, 31) in which are formed hand openings (21a, 31a). The openings have surrounding rims (22, 32) forming grooves (22a, 32a) into which the edges of holes (10a, 11a) in the sides of the bag (10, 11) can be fitted. The top edge of one of the stiffeners has holes (23) and the other has studs (33) so that the stiffeners can be clipped together. The stiffener with the studs also has a horizontal lip (35) which covers the top edge of the other when they are fixed together. The stiffeners may have pairs of downwards extending tabs which are typically apertured to receive suspension cords.
