Discusses the development of a Sonic Buoy. The high quality of theresults from the SWALES deployment vindicates the decision to developthe Sonic Buoy. The relation between the calculated wind stress and windspeed is much more clearly defined than in previous ship-basedmeasurements. On the technical side, the buoy design has been provedwith respect to survivability, and the redundancy built into the datalogging and telemetry has proved its worth
