Application of Forward Osmosis to Concentrate Waste Industrial Liquor

Waste recycling and water reclamation in semiconductor industry have become urgent issues in Taiwan because of the lack of resource and insufficient water resource. This study investigated the feasibility of forward osmosis (FO) used in the concentration of artificial waste liquor containing ammonium or arsenate discharged from semiconductor industry. Two kind of commercial FO films (A and B film) and one lab-made film with different features were adopted to compare the water flux, target compounds remained in liquor, and salt blocking capability. 0.5M NaCl solution served as the draw solution (DS), which weight was recorded during the trials for water flux calculation. Total dissolved solid (TDS), osmotic pressure and target compounds concentration were measured. The results showed that the water flux of commercial A, B, and lab-made films were 53.03 LMH, 60.65 LMH, and 44.34 LMH, respectively. While the salt blocking performance and target compounds remained percentage of the lab-made film was much better than the commercial A and B films.
