Construction and validation of a three-dimensional finite element model of hip joint

The study is to establish a precise three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) of the hip joints and to validate its accuracy for the application to the research on biomechanics. The right hip joint of a volunteer was scanned by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The resulting sectional images were input into MIMICS10.1 and ANSYS14.0 to generate 3D FEM of hip joints. With this FEM, axial compression load condition to bone and stretch condition to muscle were simulated. The simulation results were consistent in trend with the biomechanical experiment results reported by the literature. Finally, The 3D FEM of hip joints were applied to simulate stoop process successfully.
