The Agency of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), MITI of Japan, started research and development on a super/hypersonic transport propulsion system in FY1989 as an eight-year project. The project aims at establishing basic technologies for an engine that has a flight cruise capability of up to Mach 5. This engine combines a ramjet engine and a high performance turbojet engine. Recently, a test run of sub-scale variable-cycle turbo-engine started and also a freejet test of a small ramjet engine is now under preparation. This paper presents the background, objective, organization, contents, and also recent achievements of this national poject.
