The authors are developing a unified OS which provides superiorreal-time response and versatile functionality simultaneously. Toaccomplish both features, this OS consists of two kernels. One is calledν-kernel and has large number of system calls (about 130). The otheris called p-kernel and is characterized by short interrupt masking time(maximum 15 μsec). The ν-kernel is compressed into a task in thep-kernel in order to achieve short interrupt latency. Using facilitiesof inter-kernel communication and synchronization. this OS makes itpossible to realize a decentralized real-time application system bydistributing p-kernels to multiple microprocessors
