Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM™) is an additive manufacturing technology invented by S. Scott Crump in the late 1980’s and commercialized by Stratasys in 1990. Since that time, the technology has found wide spread use in applications ranging from trinkets to tooling for composites to non-structural flight hardware on aircraft. FDM™ growth has been stymied by seemingly unpredictable material properties that have made it difficult to design structural parts. In an AmericaMakes program featuring a government-industry-academia partnership, over 1400 ULTEM™ 9085 specimens were manufactured and tested for specific mechanical properties over a range of temperatures, including 246 tensile specimens. This paper explores those material properties in depth and develops a method for smartly applying the properties in finite element analysis.
