This study introduces a technique for identifying the parameters in theequation describing the heave/pitch motion of a ship by using only itsmeasured response at sea. The parameters being identified are the directand cross coupling damping and restoring parameters. These values areidentified using a reinforcement learning technique. The proposedmethod would be suitable in identifying the direct and cross couplingdamping and restoring parameters for a ship heaving and pitching underthe action of unknown excitations effected by a realistic sea state.Published data, results of a commercial seakeeping package and recordeddata for a ship’s heave and pitch motions in random seas are used to testthe accuracy and the validity of the method. It was shown that the methodis reliable in the identification of the parameters of the coupled equationof the heave-pitch motions using only the measured response at sea.
