A Peridynamic Computational Investigation of Carbon Nanotube Yarn Reinforced Composites

Peridynamic theory is used to develop a computational framework for investigating the deformation and failure of carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn reinforced polymer matrix composites subjected to tensile loading. The composite was characterized using x-ray computed tomography (CT) and probability density functions (PDFs) were created to systematically represent the microstructure. The generated PDFs were artificially modified to explore the influence of the microstructure on the mechanical behavior of the composite. Similarities and differences in the deformation and failure of the artificially generated structures are presented in detail.
