Rising traffic congestion is a constant source of stress, frustration, unwanted expenses and time loss to commuters and managers of various transportation systems. Countries, states and cities traffic management agencies are continuously searching for means and methods to reduce the menace of traffic congestion, while minimizing implementation costs and requirements of maintenance. India battles with the dual challenge of pollution and congestion. High levels of congestion have a huge cost in the form of less productivity, more fuel wastage, increased accidents and traffic-related stress due to time wasted in traffic jams. Despite the increase in road length, newly constructed highways, and better connectivity, the problem of traffic congestion persists. With increasing vehicular traffic and limited road space, it becomes necessary to adopt solution-centric and advanced technological methods to achieve free traffic flows in the congested cities. Technology can play an important part in identifying the mobility gaps and improving existing transportation systems.
