This manuscript presents the stabilisation of black cotton soil (S) with red mud (RM), a byproduct of the aluminium industry. The basic geotechnical properties including unconfined compressive strength, swelling pressure, and California bearing ratio test of virgin soil and soil stabilised with red mud have been performed. Strain controlled cyclic triaxial tests on virgin clay samples and soil stabilized with red mud have been carried out at various shear strain amplitudes and at an effective confining pressure of 100kPa. The compressive strength test indicates the increase in strength of treated soil is about 20 to 55% to that of untreated soil for 0, 7, and 28 days of curing periods. California bearing ratio of the optimum mix is found to be increased by 18.5% to 27.30% to that of untreated soil. The suitability of black cotton soil stabilized with red mud for subgrade pavements has been discussed.
