The Vibratory Control Moment Gyroscope, a New Anti-Vibration Actuator

Active vibration control systems are now tickled on over a thousand helicopters. All the anti-vibration actuators incorporated into these systems create forces, commanded by a computer controller, that reduce vibration in the fuselage. The current paper describes a new actuator that creates anti-vibration moments. The device, termed a Vibratory Control Moment Gyroscope (VCMG), creates progressive or regressive moments that closely duplicate those that helicopter rotors produce thus enabling a complete elimination of rotor moments close to the source.
