BIM Modelling of Rail Infrastructure

As investment in rail increases, infrastructure is heading underground with major rail tunnelling projects planned across Australia and New Zealand. Due to compressed and complex development sites and an increasing requirement for support infrastructure, clients are becoming more demanding in their expectations of design deliverables and asset information. The industry is seeing an increase in the number of clients specifying deliverables utilising Building Information Management processes. Traditionally, BIM has been used for vertical projects within a comparatively small development footprint. The structural and architectural industries are more advanced in the BIM environment, having used it for at least 10 years. Longitudinal and geometrically driven infrastructure presents a challenge for modelling software and designers; the opportunity now exists to cross-pollinate these skills into the rail industry. This paper discusses the experiences of the GHD rail design group transitioning from traditional 2D CAD into an integrated, collaborative BIM platform. The authors demonstrate the modelling techniques used in a real project environment and discuss the challenges associated with transitioning from a 2D design environment to a 3D BIM environment.
