Characterization of Torsional Properties of Parachute Suspension Lines

This paper investigates the torsional properties of parachute suspension lines at different locations along a 30-ft [9.144 m] suspension line. The experimental processes examined a series of static torque tests during which the suspension line was maintained at constant tensions. The angular deformation or twist was recorded at incremental locations along the line using simple USB cameras. The camera images were calibrated in the two-dimensional plane corresponding to the twist measurement location. The experimental results provide insight into the braided cord mechanical behavior as a function of location from the clamped end. The results of this testing can be used as a simple model of the suspension line torsional rigidity as a function of cord length.
