As the aquaculture industry intensively develops, its environmental impact increases. Discharges from aquaculture deteriorate the receiving environment. Wastewater from shrimp farm was considered as a good source for microalgae cultivation due to its nitrogen and phosphorus content. Chlorella sp. SHP isolated from shrimp pond, grew best in water from wastewater pond followed by that from reservoir pond and shrimp pond. Urea was added in water from wastewater pond as a cheap source of nitrogen to increase the biomass and the protein content. The optimum urea concentration for cultivation of microalgae was 0.2% w/v which gave the Chlorella sp. SHP biomass of 0.85 kg/m3. The Chlorella sp. SHP biomass contained protein content >30% with high pigment contents and high antioxidant activity based on radical scavenging activity of 66.7% indicating its potential use as live shrimp larvae feeds. This study showed the possible use of wastewater from shrimp farm for low-cost production of microalgal biomass.
