Microbially induced concrete corrosion requires major rehabilitation efforts in many municipal sanitary sewer systems, leading to more frequent selection of corrosion protection liner (CPL) systems for new projects. CPL system design for precast concrete segment tunnel linings presents different challenges than for concrete pipe linings because of the large amount of additional joints. Detailed screening of several systems for a new project in Columbus, Ohio left two for detailed consideration. These were 1) Ribbed or studded PVC or HDPE liner cast onto segments with welded joints, and 2) Linabond Co-Lining System, a proprietary chemically attached liner system. This paper describes the selection process, technical and cost comparisons, and describes the characteristics of the final candidate CPL system. This paper should be of interest to utility owners, consulting engineers, and contractors concerned with design and construction of tunnels for sanitary sewers in geologic environments requiring pressurized-face machines and precast concrete segments.
