As the demand and complexity of high energy loads increases, so too does the demand and complexity of thermal management solutions required to address those thermal loads. This paper provides background on current thermal management approaches for US Navy surface combatants and discusses the advancements that may be required to meet the emerging increase and complexity in cooling demands and associated system risks that must be mitigated for successful technology transition and implementation. Approaches and technologies related to thermal energy acquisition, transport, rejection, storage, and conversion are covered with a specific emphasis placed on potential risks to overcome for successful technology transition including meeting unique Navy requirements and performing system trade-offs.
