Wards Island WWTP Advanced Biosolids Handling and Sidestream Treatment Enhancements

The Wards Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTTP) is owned and operated by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) treats an average flow of 220 MGD and operates the largest centralized dewatering facility in New York City. The Wards Island dewatering centrifuge facility processes approximately 70 dry tons per day (dtpd) of digested sludge produced at the plant (native sludge), while also receiving an additional 60 dry tons per day of digested sludge arriving by boat from five other plants operated by NYCDEP (visitor sludge). Located at the confluence of the Harlem River, East River, and Long Island Sound, the Wards Island WWTP has been limiting its nitrogen discharge since 1992 as part of nitrogen control action plans for these water bodies. Nitrogen reduction has been achieved through continuous and ongoing innovation, facility upgrades, and optimization with the core nitrogen management process being step-feed Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR).
