The use of high moment pole materials in inductive write heads is a prerequisite to achieving adequate writeability at ultrahigh area density longitudinal as well as perpendicular magnetic recording. It has been successful demonstrated that areal density of 130 Gb/in{sup}2 can be achieved with conventional longitudinal recording using a planar pole write head design [1]. It is also shown that areal density of greater than 145 Gb/in{sup}2 can be achieved through the use of advanced probe heads [2]. In this paper, the high moment materials and their applications in the write heads for these areal density demonstrations will be discussed.
