Analytical investigation of AC transmission line operation with series compensation facilities is carried out. It is demonstrated that implementation of such devices is performed with restrictions determined by variation of voltages at intermediate substations. Significant reactive power produced by capacitor banks requires application of controlled shunt devices. Disadvantages of using a high-capacitance series compensation devices are indicated, since enlarging transmission capacity is confined by capacitor voltage drop. If compensation of long-distance overhead line inductance is needed, it could be recommended to apply several devices with reduced capacitance. Analysis of operating conditions for 765 kV Itaipu-S?o Paulo power transmission with several series compensation devices is performed. It is shown that ability to control reactive power when changing line loading stimulate significant increase in transfer capability.
