In this paper, a new method is introduced to locate the surface wave poles. The Mittag-Leffler expansion method is applied to the TM characteristic equation of single dielectric layer backed by a perfect electric conductor (PEC). Initially, the characteristic equation is reduced to suitable algebraic form, from which a polynomial equation is obtained. The initial roots of this polynomial equation are refined using available root finding techniques. Later, these results are compared against established methods to validate our method. The major advantage using Mittag-Leffler expansion method is that, it can be applied to the cases of lossless and lossy substrates without any constraints.
