Faculty Support for Effective Flipped Classrooms in Higher Education

In this research, we conducted a questionnaire survey and interview on the current state of flipped classrooms for university faculty members in order to obtain teacher support methods. The survey showed that flipped classrooms are practiced with various subjects and class sizes, which indicates the necessity of support for a wide range of subjects. In the educational method, the authors found that there is a tendency to design outside classes and face-to-face classes and that teachers promote students' understanding by combining learning activities such as note-taking and quizzes with video viewing. At the same time, some faculty members have problems in discussion among students in meeting classes. It is pointed out that there is a need to support the setting of agendas to deepen such discussions and conduct effective promotion of group work. Additionally, half of the faculty members did not change their evaluation methods. The author also found that it is necessary to support lesson design by considering a balance of educational goals, educational methods, and evaluation methods. Regarding video content and video viewing, the part of the lecture that needed to be in the video was pointed out, and the importance of relating presentation of learning and teaching strategies to video utilization to deepen video understanding was discussed.
