Biology is soft, curvilinear and time dynamic; modern silicon technology is not. Materials and devices that eliminate this profound mismatch in properties represent the foundations of new electronic systems capable of integrating intimately and non- invasively with the skin to provide continuous, clinical-quality information on physiological health status. This talk summarizes the key ideas that enable such technologies and presents specific examples of their use in wireless health monitors that mount on the skin-like temporary tattoos, skin-integrated microfluidic systems that perform quantitative analytics on sweat and motion-sensing biostamps for quantitative measurement of full body kinematics. Research and commercialized systems will be discussed.
