Gaz Métro successfully crossed multiple railway lines within the specified settlement tolerances imposed by Canadian National Railway in June 2016 with a 16-inch high pressure gas pipeline. To do this a significantly reduced ream size of only 19 inches was employed in the design with a specified reduction in the cuttings / fluid circulation. The intent of this methodology was to leave the majority of the cuttings in the bore and thereby reduce overall settlement. This was enabled by the very soft but sensitive clay soil conditions. Settlement was also an issue for a large diameter sewer line that was also crossed along with other utilities. The HDD contractor, Forages Nella Inc, of St-Henri Quebec, worked alongside the engineers to fine tune the methodology to ensure the success of the project. The project was successfully completed June 30, 2016. Only 3 hours were required for the install and pull forces were well below the maximum anticipated.
