摘要

An interferometric technique is described for measuring the spatial forms of the individual degrees of freedom through which an object or system can absorb energy from its environment. The method separates out the spatial forms of the coherent excitations present at any single frequency, and gives their relative responsivities; it is not necessary to sweep the frequency and infer their forms from resonant absorption features. The method can be used for simply characterising the ability to absorb energy from a partially coherent field, or it be be used to explore the solid-state physics of the energy-absorption process, depending on application.
