A biosensor for indirect detection of cholesterol has been developed using cholesterol oxidase enzyme as the bio-recognition element and multi walled carbon nanotubes as the support. The enzyme consumes cholesterol and oxygen, thereby reducing the oxygen availability for the electrochemical reaction. The amperometric signal for cholesterol detection is generated from the reduction of residual oxygen at the electrode surface. The sensor exhibited a linear detection range from 0.5 to 8 μM and a sensitivity of 0.6061 μA/μM in the linear region. Further, the sensor exhibited an acceptable levels of interference from physiological excess of common interfering compounds, to wit, glucose, acetaminophen, sodium lactate, and uric acid.
