The phenomenon of ennoblement, i.e. the shift of a metal's open circuit potential in the anodic direction due to microbial activity, poses some corrosion risk to metallic structures exposed to natural waters. Among many other technologies, hydroelectric power plants are of particular interest since corrosion implies high costs for repair and loss of production. A summary of experiences with this kind of MIC in hydroelectric power plants has been presented previously [1].
