In this article, we analyse the innovation patterns of Huawei, using a longitudinal in-depth single case study based on historical events. By analysing regularities in decision-making concerning product/market and technology decisions from 1987 to 2011, we have identified several patterns and principles. First of all, Huawei tended to implement independent development more extensively than its Chinese rivals. The other patterns or principles are related to this more general pattern. Huawei's basic innovation principle is to “follow” in both product/market and technology, rather than lead. It is related to “platform development” and “scale and market share rather than profit margin”. “Rich product portfolio”, “business offer differentiation” and “encircle the cities” are product/market principles that have further guided innovation decisions.
