ESA/ESTEC has granted Airbus Defense andSpace a study for the development of a versatileLEON2 and LEON3 emulation board hosted on aCOTS FPGA board.The LEON Emulation Board (LEB) is a componentfor System Simulators used as Software ValidationFacilities and Operational Simulators. It is analternative to the full software simulation of theLEON processor; additionally, because it embedsthe actual VHDL of the LEON processor, it is fullyrepresentative and delivers a performance higherthan the instruction-set software simulators.The LEB enables simulating in software thefunctions of Systems on Chip not alreadyembedded in the LEB. It is available in 3configurations for the LEON2 FT and the LEON3.Moreover, as it is built around a set of reusablesimulation building blocks (VHDL + softwaredriver), it can easily be reassembled to emulatemore accurately different Systems on Chips (SoC).This paper presents the key functions of the LEB,its performance, applications and potential futuredevelopments.
