Problem-solving strategies are critical to effective problem-solving yet few individuals and teams understand how these strategies affect their work. A lack of understanding can result in the inability to solve complex problems that in turn raises the costs of solving these problems. This paper will discuss technical problem-solving strategies starting with a basic overview of problem-solving theory followed by a description of several types of problem-solving strategies. The paper will conclude with an explanation of factors to be considered when developing an overall technical problem-solving strategy. The intended audience for this paper is managers of teams performing frequent problem-solving. Other technical roles such as engineers can apply the ideas in this paper to address technical problems they may face. Individuals can also find value in the recommendations to improve their own technical problem-solving strategies as well.
