The method involves detecting and evaluating driving behavior of a driver and/or driving situation of a vehicle to determine a target-gear based on the evaluated behavior and the situation. A switching strategy for an automatic transmission is determined in a transmission control device based on the determined target gear and an actual effective-gear of the transmission to transfer the transmission from the effective-gear into the target-gear. The switching strategy is determined based on the switching array provided in the control device. An independent claim is also included for an automatic transmission with a transmission control device for execution of automatic gear change.
