LERENG RIVER SPATE IRRIGATION SYSTEM, PURWOREJO, CENTRAL JAVA PROVINCE

Situated on the coastline of South Java, Lereng River is enriched from water infl ows towardsdownstream area. Lereng River was connected by two main rivers: Bogowonto River andCokroyasan River. During rainy season, the river widens to almost 3 times and its dischargecan be as high as 2.74 m3/s. While during dry season, the water level reduces and thedischarge goes down to about 0.01 m3/s. At this time, the river will be seen as swamp area,full of lavishly green swamp plants, with patches of mud and shallow waters everywhere.This stark water quantity difference is seen as potential to be used. During rainy season, theriver is used as fi sheries and irrigation source for nearby rice fi elds. It also poses fl ood risk toneighbouring area during high precipitation. However, during dry season the river is neglectedexcept for seasonal cultivation of Enceng Gondok (a commodity for handicraft material), whilewater demands is still relatively high from the surrounding settlements and farms.
