Container ship wreck removals present an increasingly complex challenge for salvors. Removal of containerised cargoin remote locations with limited resources complicates dealing with grounded ships, especially when they are listed. Thefirst operation in these projects is often to stabilise the hull in order to deal with the cargo more efficiently. With thenew generation of container ships being ever larger, these issues will be exacerbated in the future suggesting thatspecialised salvage equipment should be considered. The author provides an insight into the particular issues presentedby container ships, focusing on structural integrity, removal of containerised cargo and associated stability issues. Theseare illustrated by case studies of recent high profile container ship wreck removals.
