A study on the precipitate formed from soybean peroxidase-catalyzed (SBP) polymerization of phenol has explored two potential uses. SBP adsorption on the precipitate through hydrophobic interaction can be characterised by the Langmuir isotherm equation. The active SBP on the precipitate was utilized by directly recycling precipitate collected after reaction. This resulted in reduction of the minimum enzyme concentration required to remove 1mM phenol from aqueous solution from 1.2 U/mL to 0.5 U/mL. Also, addition of Triton X-100 resulted in releasing the pre-immobilized SBP. Secondly, a cycle of SBP immobilization on precipitate, elution of the SBP by adding Triton X-100, and regeneration of the precipitate by ethanol wash, provided a means for concentrating SBP activity from dilute solution.
