The self-igniting engine has been under development for many decades following its invention by Rudolf Diesel in 1892. By the early 1920's the diesel engine had reached a level of maturity that it could be used for mobile applications, especially for vehicles. From the beginning the major focus of diesel engine technology improvement was fuel combustion directly linked to its dispersion in the engine. This requires sophisticated injection technology and strict diesel fuel specifications. With the advantage of a liquid non-ignitable fuel, cold flow behavior depends on temperature and, even in regions with mild winters, available middle distillate cuts cannot be used without measures to improve cold flow properties.
