US EPA Alternative Method 082, Technology moving forward

The DOCS Ⅱ project set out to reduce the burden of opacity compliance monitoring through the use of digital cameras and computer software instead of the accepted practice of smoke school trained and certified human Method 9 readers. The project testing produced clear evidence that the digital camera and its accompanying computer software could produce opacity measurements that where more accurate and precise than human readers against a measured smoke source at a Method 9 certifying smoke school. With this evidence the DOCS Ⅱ team set out to create a standard for the use of DOCS Ⅱ to provide compliance based opacity measurements more accurately than human observers could achieve.
