The use of impervious flexible PVC geomembranes started in Romania in the 1980s, and has been recently resumed to waterproof new and old embankment dams. The new projects adopt very thick PVC geocomposites installed in an exposed position, anchored to the upstream face to resist wind uplift using a well-known patented tensioning system, and sealed to the perimeter by a watertight seal.
