This research proposes a mechanism bar with integrated shape-memory alloy (SMA) actuators to be implemented in kinematic structures. With this active bar, the usually rigid body length is variable and it can carry out new functions. The qualities of the mechanism have been developed with a model based on the energy flow of the SMA wires. The coupler curve variant of a four-bar linkage (crank rocker) is analyzed using the known behavior of the active link. Finally, requirements for automotive application will be specified, and possible systems for implementing such an SMA-driven bar will be presented.
