3D volume rendering is crucial for various scientific and engineering applications. Both computing and I/O issues must be addressed for real time volume rendering and interactive animation. Unfortunately, I/O issues have been neglected. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to addressing I/O issues in volume rendering and present a parallel I/O system optimized for volume rendering.
