In complex subjects retention is an issue. Interested students appear to excel in such subjects, but the retention rates for everyone else suffer somewhat. In this paper an example is laid out of how to utilize motion pictures, and specifically the scientific errors therein, to create interesting problems that this author has found helps in student retention of complex engineering material. The example focuses on radiation heat transfer in general, and calculating configuration factors and heat transfer rates in particular. The problem from motion pictures is both interesting and complex enough to engage students in a meaningful experience where engineering tools are utilized.
