Information for Inspection and Maintenance of Stormwater Manufactured Treatment Devices

Types of information necessary for properly inspecting and maintaining stormwater manufactured treatment devices (MTDs) are identified through a field monitoring and evaluation study of MTDs installed along New Jersey highways. Three categories of information are identified: (1) Data that must be obtained in order to locate the device, characterize the drainage area that produces materials entering the device, and verify the original device selection and sizing; (2) Measurements and observations that must be made during the field inspection in order to determine whether the device should be cleaned out immediately or to forecast the next cleanout, such as changes in bottom sediment depth and surrounding site condition; and (3) Data that must be recorded immediately after the cleanout, such as disposal of cleanout materials and structural inspection. A comprehensive and uniform data collection system would help keep track of all installed devices, and through forecasting and scheduling, inspect and maintain the devices in a timely manner as well as in a cost-effective way.
