Optimization of Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Plant's Pump Design: A Cost Approach

Two scenarios for the design of a wastewater pumping station serving a wastewater treatment plant for a community of an approximate population of 90,000 were investigated. Both scenarios fulfilled the design capacity and Ten-States guidelines requirements. Scenario 1 consisted of two 20 MGD pumps while Scenario 2 added a 10 MGD pump in addition to those considered in the first case. The results from the study revealed that by adding the 10 MGD pump, the energy usage was significantly decreased on a daily basis. The second scenario showed higher capital investment costs, however, the Life Cycle Costs LCC analysis showed that Scenario 2 performed much better cost wise yielding a whole cycle cost reduction of 4% with a 13% reduction in both energy cost and carbon dioxide emissions.
