The invention relates to an advanced control method for optimising operating costs in wastewater treatment plants with denitrification, said method determining the instructions for controlling the biological process in its carbonated and nitrogenated phases on the basis of periodical measures taken in the treatment plant. The operating cost to be optimised is not an instantaneous cost, but a weighted average of the instantaneous operating costs obtained over a period of time called "optimisation horizon". This operating cost decreases as the advanced control adapts to the process. Automatic learning techniques are used in order to ensure that this advanced control develops in the appropriate manner. The operating cost takes into account the nitrogen concentration in the effluent, the energy consumed, and any aspect considered relevant, by the plant operator, for optimisation.
