The complex GdI3·2CS(NH2)2·10H2O was prepared with a new method and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, infrared analysis, mass spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. The coordinative cation [Gd(H2O)9]3+ is formed by Gd3+ and nine H2O, CS(NH2)2 acts on Gd3+ through N and S, three I− and the rest H2O act on [Gd(H2O)9]3+ by the form of static attraction or hydrogen bond. And the antibacterial activity against escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus and bacillus subtilis of gadolinium iodide, thiourea and the complex was studied first. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of all samples against bacillus subtilis was better than that against escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial activity of high concentration solution(0.05mol·L−1) was better than that of low concentration(0.01mol·L−1). The antibacterial activity of the complex GdI3·2CS(NH2)2·10H2O was better than that of corresponding coordinator.
