Poultry Pharming: Next-Generation Technologies for Egg-Based Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing

Recombinant vector technologies for embryonated hen eggs are an emerging platform for Global Health applications including production of vaccines and biologics. Industrializing these new platforms requires investment in translational research at molecular, machine, and systems levels. Deployment of a successfully developed platform in Poultry Pharm systems would offer an attractive solution to global health challenges including influenza pandemic preparedness. Needed for progress are: better molecular process level technologies that create or improve manufacturing at the molecular/cellular level; Machine level technologies that modify or improve manufacturing processes such as single-use technologies, compliance, equipment and biosafety; and systems level technologies for innovation in the manufacturing enterprise including quality by design, technology transfer, cleanliness and compliance. An initiative to construct model Poultry Pharms aims to develop complete modular, low-cost GMP manufacturing facilities incorporating recombinant egg technologies, single-use downstream processing technologies and just-in-time production models.
