In this work, the design and simulation methodology for a stability and control augmentation system of a morphing-wing aircraft is considered. Special attention is directed to power and moment cost of morphing actuation. The controllers are designed using actuator moment and power penalization, thereby insuring acceptable actuator loads. The optimization exposes the required tradeoff in any morphing design, in which the high performance maneuvers available by morphing are offset by the strict actuator loading requirements. A control system which combines morphing with traditional control surfaces is investigated, and the reliance of the aircraft control on morphing vs. conventional control surfaces is determined for various levels of acceptable actuator loads. The suitability of the gull-wing morphing for maneuvering is investigated.
